"As a therapist, I believe in the power of each individual to overcome barriers that prevent their life pathway from taking a more positive direction. As a licensed professional counselor, I am invested in creating a calm and safe haven where growth and improvement can occur. Building positive therapeutic rapport enables patients to feel supported and acknowledged. Using a person-centered approach requires understanding the perspective patients have about issues in their lives to foster open, honest communication within a therapeutic relationship. When people feel comfortable expressing their emotions, an effective counselor is able to gain knowledge of how that person views their problems. The ability to take on the perspective of others regarding the stress in their lives helps me, as a counselor, to step back from the situation to see the big picture and patterns of behavior. Developing a healthy approach for stressful situations in treatment increases distress tolerance over the course of therapy. Reducing stress will not only alleviate the immediate crisis situation brought into treatment, but it will help to develop resilience in the future and help to increase life satisfaction.
Through development of boundaries, learning limits of personal control, and increasing self-awareness in therapy, patients are able to heal from past traumas, forgive themselves for past wrong-doings, overcome codependency and recover from addiction. By turning focus from where a person has been to where they currently stand, future goals become clear and patients are able to begin laying the plans for a renewed positive life pathway. Therapy is not just a profession, I believe it is a calling to promote and spread positivity to others. Empathetic understanding and validation are the catalysts of positive change in therapy. As a licensed professional therapist, I provide an unbiased sounding board for options while working at each patient's individual level of readiness change. Clients are responsible for outlining treatment goals in therapy. It is my role as a Licensed Professional Counselor to offer guidance, insightful feedback and promoting patients to utilize coping skills related to their specific issues for positive behavioral changes. Positive rapport and therapist-patient collaboration helps patients feel validated in their emotional experiences and reinforces therapeutic recovery. If patients see that their counselor is invested and engaged with them during treatment, they become more actively motivated to progress in therapy . In counseling, as people begin to gain confidence and a sense of emotional well-being, they independently begin to steer their life onto a more positive pathway. " -Whitney L. Scheef, MA, LPC, CCPT |
As an experienced Licensed Professional Counselor, Whitney has been working closely with individuals in need since she entered the workforce a decade ago. Whitney has provided care-giving to hospice and home health with elderly and disabled persons, worked at Lubbock MHMR as a Child & Adolescent services mental healthcare service coordinator and provided skills training to children having difficulty within the public school system, conducted parent skills training sessions and assisted with monitoring psychiatric medication management for families by working closely with psychiatrists prescribing medication to clients. Whitney has also worked at Tarrant County MHMR providing admission assessments and service coordination to individuals with Intellectual & Developmental Deficits. As one of the primary abult inpatient therapists at a prominent psychiatric inpatient facility in Arlington, TX Whitney became experienced with diagnostic procedures, individual and group therapy facilitation and gained a good understanding of the mental healthcare hospitalization and aftercare service process. Whitney completed a lengthy internship at a private, non-profit counseling office in Fort Worth under the supervision of Dr. Carol Doss, PhD, a well-known mental health professional in the DFW community. There she gained play therapy experience and also continued to work with adults suffering with anxiety, depression, gender identity, grief, substance abuse and marital relationship difficulties. Upon transitioning to working within psychiatric hospital outpatient facilities, with both teens and adults with mental health and substance abuse disorders, Whitney began to further hone her counseling skills as an intensive group therapist and family therapy facilitator. Due to her extensive experience in multiple hospital settings, community case management, intake assessments, and extensive experience providing group, individual, marital and family therapy, Whitney has the expertise, know-with-all, and knowledge regarding mental health and relationship dynamics to provide quality oversight of both Positive Pathway Counseling Offices and is the primary professional therapist providing individual, family and relationship counseling services to Positive Pathways clients and their loved ones.
